Kitchen countertops in Titusville: what to choose

For most Titusville kitchens, quartz is the easy choice, granite is the better one for heat, and laminate still makes sense on a tight budget. The right pick depends on your light, your cooking and your budget. Call now to talk to a local kitchen remodeler about yours.

The options, compared plainly

All of these work in a Florida kitchen. They differ in how they treat heat, sun, seams and your wallet.

What Florida conditions change

Sun. Many Space Coast kitchens have a big window over the sink or sliding doors nearby. Some quartz colors can shift under years of direct light, so if a counter sits in full sun, ask for the maker's guidance on exposure. Granite and quartzite handle it without trouble.

Humidity. Stone and quartz do not care about damp air. Wood does. Butcher block is lovely, but it should be sealed on all sides, including the underside and around any sink cutout. A kitchen sitting without AC during a remodel can also cause a wood top to cup.

Salt air. Salt does not harm the common countertop materials. It does affect what sits on them, so spend a little more on the faucet and sink. A stainless undermount sink in a decent gauge will outlast a thin one, and a solid brass faucet body beats a cheaper one close to the water.

Floors that are not level. Older homes often have slabs that have settled a little. Heavy stone counters need level cabinets beneath them, and a good installer shims the cabinets first. If you see gaps along the wall in your home now, mention it.

How a countertop job works

  1. Selection. You choose a material, then a color. For stone, visit the yard and pick the slab if you can, because a small sample rarely tells the whole story.
  2. Template. Stone and quartz counters are measured once the base cabinets are installed. This is why new counters do not arrive with the cabinets.
  3. Fabrication. The fabricator cuts the top, including sink and cooktop openings. Ask how long this takes, because you may be without a working sink meanwhile.
  4. Install and plumbing hookup. After the top is set, the sink and faucet are reconnected. Coordinate that visit, or you could be waiting for a plumber while the counter sits finished.

What to put in the quote

Make sure bids name the material, brand or stone, thickness, edge profile, number of seams, sink and faucet cutouts, tear-out of the old top and backsplash work. Two quotes can look alike until you compare those lines. If the existing laminate top is glued down, ask what happens if the cabinets get damaged on removal.

Cost depends on the material, kitchen size, cutouts and edges, so a per-square-foot quote alone may not compare well. See how counters fit into a full project in the cost guide, and think about your cabinets first, since a new top on failing boxes is money poorly spent.

Old counters, old materials

In older homes, old adhesives, vinyl flooring and backers can contain regulated materials, and pre-1978 paint falls under the EPA's lead-safe renovation rules for paid contractors. Ask your remodeler how they handle tear-out in a home of that age.

A permit is rarely needed for a straight counter swap, though moving a sink or adding circuits may need one. Confirm with the Titusville Building Department or, outside city limits, Brevard County.

Countertop questions

What is the most durable countertop for a Florida kitchen?

For everyday use, quartz and granite both last for decades. Granite handles hot pans and direct sun better, while quartz needs no sealing. The right answer depends on how you cook and where the light falls.

Can new counters go on old cabinets?

Yes, if the cabinets are sound and level. Heavy stone can expose weak boxes, so have them checked first. If your cabinets are near the end of their life, replace them before spending on stone.

How long will I be without a kitchen during a counter swap?

On a counter-only job, expect a few days to two weeks between tear-out and install, depending on how the fabricator schedules. Some shops template before removal, which shortens the gap. Ask before you book.
